Tetons Win Tight One Over Pioneers
The Tetons picked up a big MonDak opponent Miles Community College inside The Well Thursday night.
The Tetons were a little cold early, allowing the Pioneers to start the game on an 8-0 run before Shaheed Muhammad would get the scoring started from a deep 3-pointer. This would be the start of a 9-4 run that would see the Pioneers with a 12-9 advantage. Each team would experience their multiple small runs with the Pioneers extending it to as much as 10 halfway through the first half. The Tetons would cut the lead to two with three minutes remaining. It would be a back-and-forth play for the rest of the half. The Pioneers would strike last with a shot clock buzzer beating jumper to head into halftime with a 35-31 advantage.
"We started slower than we would like on offense, but it wasn't for the fault of shot selection. We were getting to the rim and getting good looks, the guys did a good job at continuing the attack and have more of an inside-out attack. Defensively, we held strong and got enough stops to keep us in it with the slow start offensively," Herman said.
Tetons would start the second half stronger offensively, again with an inside-out attack getting to the rim. Tetons would see a 4-0 run that included a fast-break alley-oop from Muhammad to Moses Gordon that brought the Teton faithful to their feet. The Pioneers would then take control and stretch the lead to as many as 10 with fourteen minutes to play. It would be back to a back-and-forth battle with each team having small runs, Pioneers still holding onto a 10-point lead with eleven minutes remaining.
The Tetons would cut into that 10-point deficit with a three-pointer in transition by Apollo Beck. This seemed to snap a cold shooting spell from beyond the three-point line for the Tetons. Tetons would sustain their run with good defensive play and shot selection. Wilson Rankin hits a corner three-pointer off an extra pass from Grady Gonsioroski which would cut the deficit to 4 with 7:30 remaining. That was then followed up with a steal by Muhammad and another corner three to cut the lead to one, this time by Muhammad assisted by Gordon. A transition break started by Gordon and cleaned up by Gonsioroski would give the Tetons their first lead with 5:19 left to play.
Back-and-forth it would continue with the Pioneers claiming and clinging onto a four-point lead with 1:15 left to play. Tetons continued to attack the basket and getting great shots. With 45 seconds to play, Muhammad would use a ball-screen and the Tetons would play great team basketball with ball movement and eventually finding the open man, Gordon for a corner three-pointer to cut the Pioneer lead to 1. Pioneers would be fouled on a shot and split at the free throw line.
After a timeout, Tetons would play great team basketball again, working the ball around and eventually finding Adedo inside to tie the score with 12 seconds in regulation. The Pioneers would inbound quickly and push the ball up the court and get a heavily contested two-point attempt that would miss. Gordon came down with a strong rebound and was fouled on the play that would make him go to the free throw line for bonus free throws. After a timeout, Gordon would sink both, Tetons leading 67-65. The Pioneers would inbound and get a good look for a buzzer beating three-pointer but this one would go in the Tetons favor.
"This was a good one for us to get, very happy for the guys! We didn't quit, they just kept digging their heels in for another stop, and offensively we stuck to the plan and played team basketball. We have had a lot of close games this year, very happy for them to close this one out and do it in front of an awesome crowd in The Well tonight!"
Tetons will be back in action on Sunday, January 29th at the University of Jamestown-JV.
