Nathan Martell Named Head Volleyball Coach at Williston State College
Williston, ND – Williston State College has officially welcomed Nathan Martell as the new Head Volleyball Coach for the Tetons. Martell brings an extensive coaching background spanning over two decades and a proven track record of success at multiple levels of competition.
Martell joins Williston State after serving as the Head Volleyball Coach at Cameron University for the past two seasons. Prior to his time at Cameron, Martell spent six seasons as an assistant coach at CSU Pueblo, where he played a pivotal role in building the program into a competitive force. Under his guidance, the team made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and 2022.
With more than 20 years of volleyball coaching experience, Martell has developed a reputation for strategic innovation and player development. He most recently contributed to Division I volleyball as a Volunteer Assistant Coach at the University of North Dakota during the 2015 season. While in Grand Forks, Martell helped the Fighting Hawks achieve a 21-13 record, including an impressive 11-3 performance at home. His work with the Liberos proved invaluable, as Mackenzie Hart earned Big Sky Libero of the Year honors under his mentorship.
Martell's experience extends to high school and club volleyball in Colorado Springs, where he spent over a decade honing his coaching skills. From 2010-2012, Martell served as the Head Volleyball Coach at Sand Creek High School, leading the team to a 27-17 record in 2011. Before that, he was an Assistant Coach at St. Mary's High School from 2004-09, where he helped guide the program to a stellar 23-6 record in 2009. Martell returned to St. Mary's in 2013, continuing to build the program with a focus on fundamentals and teamwork.
Martell also brings junior college experience, having worked as an Assistant Coach for both the volleyball and softball programs at Trinidad State Junior College during the 2012-13 season. The Trojans posted a 19-21 record that year, demonstrating Martell's ability to compete and build talent at the JUCO level.
Since 2004, Martell has also contributed significantly to club volleyball, working with the Colorado Springs Altitude Volleyball Club as both an Assistant and Head Coach. His work with the club level has helped him develop a sharp eye for talent and a deep understanding of player development.
Williston State College Associate Athletic Director Mason Przybilla expressed enthusiasm for the hire, stating, "Coach Martell brings a wealth of experience and a passion for the sport. We are confident that he will continue to build our program and help our student-athletes succeed both on and off the court."
