Tetons Take Conference Opener 3-1 Over Bismarck State, Thompson Shines on the Mound
Williston, ND — The Williston State College Baseball Team opened conference play in dominant fashion over the weekend, taking three out of four games from Bismarck State. The Tetons delivered a strong all-around performance highlighted by a complete game gem from sophomore right-hander Matthew Thompson and timely pitching that secured the series victory.
Williston State wasted no time making a statement in the opener, routing the Mystics 15-5 in a lopsided affair. Game two saw a much tighter contest, but the Tetons edged out Bismarck 5-4 thanks to clutch late-inning pitching and defense. In game three, Thompson took the ball and delivered one of the most impressive performances of the young season. The sophomore ace went the distance, tossing 7 innings of one-run baseball while allowing only four hits. He struck out eight and issued zero walks in the 2-1 win.
"Matt was in complete control out there," said head coach [Coach Przybilla]. "He attacked the zone, mixed his pitches well, and gave us exactly what we needed. That kind of performance energizes the whole team."
Despite falling in the series finale 10-4, the Tetons walked away with the series win and a 3-1 start in conference play. The pitching staff's consistency was a major key, with quality outings across the board keeping Bismarck's offense in check for most of the weekend.
Now, Williston State shifts its focus to Lake Region State College as the Tetons look to ignite their offense and build off their strong start. With solid pitching already in place, the bats could be the difference-maker moving forward.
"We know what we have on the mound," said [Coach Przybilla]. "If we can get our hitters going, we'll be a tough team to beat."
The Tetons return to action this week with a four-game set against Lake Region, aiming to stay hot and climb the conference standings.
